Snapware of Shattered Dreams
Craig had screwed up. Big time. He knew he needed to make it up to Danielle, so he decided to make her favorite food: Sushi. Sure, he had never made it before. Or eaten it. Or really ever heard of it until she had suggested they get some sometime. But how hard could it be? Just roll up some rice and raw fish into some seaweed. It wasn't like actually cooking which, for the record, Craig was pretty good at.
He had prepared the rice earlier, since it takes a while to cook the traditional Japanese sticky variety used in sushi. He didn't have any actual food storage containers, so he just emptied out his decorations from his Snapware Snap 'N Stack ornament box and kept it in there until he was read for it.
He had also already julienned all the veggies and kept them neatly separated in the two trays of his Snap 'N Stack storage box. He got it out of the fridge, laid out his first sheet of nori and got to work. It took a little practice, but 15 minutes later, he had four artfully formed sushi rolls, just in time for Danielle's knock at the door.
"Come in!" he said to her a little over-enthusiastically. "You want some edamame? I've got it over here in this container. It's actually supposed to be a ribbon dispenser but … anyway I'll just go ahead and sprinkle some sea salt and … there. Please, help yourself. I made more than enough. I didn't know what kind you liked the best, so I made a variety of rolls. California, spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and smoked salmon and cream cheese."
Danielle just stared at him blankly.
"Listen, Danielle. I know I'm talking a lot. I do that when I get nervous. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for what happened the other day with Phil. It's just that … well, I like you a lot and I got jealous and I know that's not an excuse and I know I overreacted and … well, I'm really sorry."
"Can you forgive me?"
Danielle finally spoke.
"First of all, that's imitation crab in the California roll. Disgusting. Secondly, you left the tails on the shrimp. Ew. Thirdly, I'm pretty sure that's GLITTER in the rice. Did you not even wipe out the container that, by the way, is meant for ornaments and NOT food?"
Craig looked hurt. Danielle headed for the door.
"And lastly, there's nothing to forgive because we're not together. And we never will be," she said as she closed the door behind her.
