Thomas needed a bigger oven.

It all started when he bought a Kuhn Rikon Handmade Stoneware Bread Basket. He and his wife, Gina, had used it as a fruit bowl for a few weeks until he decided to heat it up. It was, after all, oven-safe up to 356°F. And the idea of being able to keep their sliced bread warm all through dinner was intriguing enough.

It worked perfectly. Maybe even too perfectly, in fact. Thomas began to complain that his plate was too cold and that his utensils felt like ice in his hands. “How can we expect to keep the roast warm when we have this terrible, room-temperature table? And don’t get me started on these chairs. Every bit of heat I consume goes right through me, transferred immediately to the wood beneath my rear. What a waste.”

Gina tried to calm him down, but there was no use. The Kuhn Basket had spoiled him. He would not be satisfied until he had an oven that could fit the whole kitchen inside. Or maybe that wasn’t even it. He wanted a kitchen that never cooled down, a room so hot you could fry eggs on the floor and have water for tea simply by running the faucet. Thomas dreamed of watching a burger cook right there on his plate in front of him, his forks and knives glowing molten orange, his glass of wine boiling over.
