The Neighborly Thing
A couple of days after her brilliant toilet-flooding plan to officially meet her mysterious stranger, Danielle had freshly-snaked plumbing but was no closer to knowing his name. So when there was an unexpected knock, she jumped out of her chair, checked her hair in the mirror, and opened the door.
But of course it wasn’t him. It was a blonde woman holding a bowl full of salad.
“Hi, I’m Lesley. I noticed you were new to the building, so I wanted to stop by and welcome you.”
“Oh. That’s very nice of you. Hi, I’m Danielle.” There was an awkward silence for a few seconds while the two just stood staring at each other. Lesley peeked around to take a look inside. “I’m sorry! Where are my manners?” said Danielle. “Please, come in.”“Your place is really … cute,” said Lesley although she clearly didn’t mean it. “Very … eclectic. Or boho chic. That’s a thing, right?”
Danielle looked around at an apartment of hand-me-down furniture and thrift-store finds. Whatever it was, it wasn’t intentional. Most of it was just left over from her college days. “Yeah, I guess it is a little hodge-podge.”Again, the two women stood in silence, awkwardly. Lesley stepped toward Danielle and offered her the salad bowl. “Here, I brought you this. It’s sort of my specialty.”
Danielle looked down at the salad of iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes and cucumbers. It was pretty unremarkable to be someone’s specialty. Not to mention an odd thing to give someone. A pie, maybe. Cookies? Sure. But an iceberg salad? Weird.“Oh, and you can keep the bowl. It’s a Joseph Joseph and it comes with a serving fork and spoon too. You can put all kinds of things in it. Fruit salad. Pasta salad. And regular salad of course.”
“Thanks,” said Danielle. “That’s very … thoughtful.”For the third time in five minutes, they were both at a loss for something more to say. Finally, Danielle spoke up.
“Hey! You’ve lived here for a while. I sorta ran into this guy, he’s kinda tall with dark, messy hair. Probably a little older than me. Cute, but kinda shy. Do you happen to know who he is?”Lesley thought for a moment before saying, “Are you talking about the guy who lives one floor down? Though he’s definitely not shy. Really chatty, actually. And I caught him staring down my blouse on the elevator one day.”
Danielle knew immediately that she must be talking about Phil.“No, that’s not him. Oh well. Thanks anyway.”
“Sure,” said Lesley as she walked toward the door. “I better be going. Got to get to my crowing yoga class.”Though it was against her better judgment, Danielle had to ask. “Crowing yoga?”
“Oh, I can’t believe you’ve never heard of it. It’s where you stand in tree pose for an hour then caw like a crow once every 90 seconds. It really emphasizes proper breathing technique while aligning your chakras. You should come sometime.”“Yeah, well. I’m REALLY busy with, you know … other stuff. Anyway, thanks again for the salad and bowl. Oh, is it dishwasher safe?”
“You’re welcome, and yes it is. You’re gonna just love those cherry tomatoes. They’re just great this time of year,” Lesley said as she closed the door.“I’m sure,” said Danielle right before dumping the salad in the trash.
