All Things Must Pass
Phil's door was unlocked. He knew that meant Danielle was inside making the dinner she promised him, but he still felt that little moment of- what? Shock? Fear? Joy? Did he quietly wish it was a burglar instead? Or was he finally ... happy?
Danielle was busy chopping things in the kitchen. "Phil? Is that you?"
Phil set down his keys and didn't say anything. He just looked at all the Kitchenaid 14-piece Cookware Set on the counter.
"Hi, hon!" Danielle gestured at the full stove. "I'm making dinner, if you want to help. Let me explain, that 1 Quart Saucepan has the alfredo sauce that I'm heating up, the 2 Quart saucepan has the noodles, the 3 Quart saute pan is where I'm prepping the onions and the meatballs in the 6 Quart stockpot. Don't touch the two skillets in the sink, they had raw meat in them and I haven't had time to wash them yet."
Phil didn't say anything.
"Oh, and don't put your keys on the table like you normally do, okay? I rearranged the layout for more efficient cooking, and now I've got those two 9" Round Cake Pans where your keys USED to be. We'll be cooking more, and we've got to keep things clean. Now your keys go in this drawer here."
Phil didn't say anything. Danielle opened the highest drawer in the furthest cupboard.
"See? I've thrown out all those pizza coupons and made room. Now you can put your keys in here!"
Phil put his keys in the drawer, and closed it. Danielle noticed his silence.
"Do you not like the idea? I guess I could move the two 10x15 Cookie Pans and you could use that space, if you wanted. Maybe I should have asked before throwing away the pizza coupons. I'm sorry. Are you mad at me?"
Phil didn't say anything for a moment. Then he nodded, as though to himself, and spoke.
"Danielle, let me ask you something. Have you ever thought about- about moving in with me?"
Danielle laughed, turning back to the stove. "In this tiny place?"
"No, not here. In a better apartment. One in some other building. Maybe it's time we left this place behind."
Danielle didn't say anything. But she smiled. Slowly at first, then much, much larger.
