It was the same every winter, and it always made Tim feel like he was failing as a father. The heat turned on, the dry coughs started. Maybe he could pretend Olivia was too grown up and Jake had to be tough, but poor little Ella? Tim couldn't spin his lies around her. And he had to accept it: all three of his kids needed his help.

Oh, they'd never thank him for the PureGuardian Ultrasonic Humidifier. But that wasn't why he did it. That wasn't why any father did it.

It didn't matter if Jake never said "Thank you, Dad, for the ultrasonic waves that fight the growth of mold and mildew inside the tank. It didn't matter if Olivia never said "This humidifier's hot and cold settings are both so quiet that I never even notice it running as I sleep." It didn't even matter if Ella never one day brought home an essay entitled "My Dad: The Hero Who Chose A Large-Capacity Water Tank!"

All that mattered was Tim knew, and Tim noticed all those dry coughs fading away. Because Tim had long ago learned what all fathers learn: if you do it right, you're the only one who'll every notice ... but at least you'll have done it right.
