A Little Practice
"Is that you, Craigy-Bear?" Sylvia set her shopping bag and stacked the loose CDs on the edge of her coffee table.
"Yes, Aunt Sylvia!" Craig yelled from the kitchen. "I'm just in here practicing!"
Sylvia didn't answer right away. She wanted a moment to herself before her world went crazy.
"Practicing what, Craigy-Bear? Messing up my coffee table?"
"No, Aunt Sylvia, I'm cooking! I bought a Joseph Joseph Elevate 6-Piece Utensil Set and I wanted to get some baseline readings before trying things at my place."
Sylvia let herself gently drop into a chair. "Oh, really? You've been cooking in the kitchen I just finished cleaning this morning? Tell me more about that, Craig, those baseline readings you're taking."
"Sure, Aunt Sylvia!" Craig called. "I've been cooking spaghetti all day and trying some different things. First I used the spaghetti server to scoop some spaghetti out. You know, as a control group? I only spilled a little water."
"Uh huh." Sylvia kicked off her heels and lay back with a hand over her eyes.
"And then," Craig continued, "I took the slotted spoon and tried the same thing! Of course, I did both these tests over the counter so I could test the size of the run-off puddle."
"Of course." Sylvia turned to lie on her side. "And you didn't have time to clean it up, right?"
"Too much science to do!" Craig called happily. "But I did remember to step over it so I wouldn't slip while testing the solid spoon."
"And you tested that by?"
"Throwing the spaghetti at the wall. It actually sticks, Aunt Sylvia, do you know that?"
Sylvia reached her arm towards her purse, and her cigarettes. They were just a little too far away.
"And I'm still not done testing! On deck I've got a solid spoon, a ladle, and a flexible turner, all heat resistant up to 480°F, which is also 248.89°C, which is WELL under the temperature of the sauce I'm making on the back burner. I couldn't find a lid for the pot so I just stuffed a sweater on top."
"The pink one, right?" Sylvia said from underneath a pillow. "Cashmere, with a price tag still on it?"
"That's it! I figured you wouldn't mind since I already got it dirty wiping up the melted garlic butter."
Sylvia didn't say anything for some time. Then she felt a moment of clarity. She took the pillow off her face, stood up, and walked into the kitchen.
Craig was just sprinkling some crushed red pepper on a big plate of baked ziti. Except for the Joseph Joseph Elevate 6-Piece Utensil Set soaking in the sink, everything was spotless.
"Come on, Aunt Sylvia," said Craig, handing her a fork. "I'm not sixteen any more, you know."
